FENTON – When Kristi Ocenasek joined her first Relay for Life team four years ago, she couldn’t know that just four years later she would lead a team to honor the memory of her late cousin.

Jon Flowers, 43, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last Nov. 27.

“Last year, about a month before our relay event, (he) was diagnosed and it was more important than ever to raise awareness and pray for hope,” Ocenasek, a member of the Lake Fenton Board of Education, said in an e-mail. “For me, the fight to find a cure is far from over.”

The American Cancer Society’s 24-hour Relay for Life of Fenton begins at 2 p.m. June 15 at the Lake Fenton Middle School athletic field.

“During the relay this year our family will hold a memorial walk for Jon on Friday night (June 15),” Ocenasek said.

“It will be a time for us to grieve over our loss, share fond memories and unite with hundreds of other who are to fighting cancer or have lost someone they love to this awful disease. It will be a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another. We will celebrate life, family, friendship and a chance to work together toward a cancer-free future.”

The annual event was moved this year from the Fenton High School tennis court area because of construction, said Tammy

Harbin, a community representative with the American Cancer Society. She said 52 teams have signed up, 13 more than last year. The emotional event that includes a survival ceremony at 6 p.m.

June 15 does have an air of celebration. “We have 24 hours of entertainment,” Harbin said. “We’re really trying to promote kids’ activities.” She said there will be a bounce house and movies showing all night on a big blow-up screen and a Kidz Bidz silent auction where items are $10 or less. “We have a talent show, live bands, a DJ, karaoke, live auction and food,” Harbin said.

The luminaria service is at dusk, around 9:30 p.m.

“We have thousands of luminaria bags lined around the track, lit in honor of, or in memory of, people touched by cancer,” Harbin said. “We walk a lap in silence and in reflective memory of the lives that have been touched by cancer.” The car show will be back for the second year, but much bigger, she said. It goes along with the event’s theme, Relay Road Trip.

As a child, Ocenasek lost both of her grandfathers to cancer. “Once you attend a Relay for Life event you are captivated by the warmth of the people you meet,” Ocenasek said. “You will see first hand just how many people are affected by cancer and truly feel the hope that is inside of so many others who are praying for a cancer cure.”

Another Sad loss for the Flowers Family

We received news  early  this morning that we have lost another family member.  Robert “Puff” Flowers was killed in a car accident.  We don’t have many details at this point, but will try to post more as they come.  Puff was the son of Butch Flowers, (Ron and Bob’s brother).  He leaves behind a wife and two adorable young sons. We are shocked and saddened.. He will be sorely missed.  Please keep our family in your prayers….
